A random number 1 to 7
Seven is the number of days in a week, which makes this page the quickest way to pick a day at random. Seven equal slices sit on a wheel, one spin picks one of them, and a window shows the result. Use it as a random number generator 1-7 for a day, a person in a group of seven, or any game that asks for a number between 1 and 7.
It is free, runs in your browser and needs no account. The wheel opens ready on 1 to 7, so there is nothing to set up. Press Spin and read the number.
How to pick a number 1-7
- Decide what the numbers mean. Call 1 Monday and 7 Sunday, or start the week on Sunday if that is how your calendar runs.
- Press Spin. You can also click the wheel or press Ctrl (⌘ on a Mac) plus Enter.
- Read the result in the window. The Results tab lists every number from your visit, newest first.
- Draw a whole week by switching on No repeats and spinning seven times. Each picked number comes off the wheel.
The odds for one through seven
Each number has a one-in-seven chance, about 14.3%, on every spin. No day is favoured and none is “due” because it has been missing for a while. Seven cannot be split into two equal halves, so it is a good size for choices where there is no natural pairing.
The number is picked by your browser’s secure random number generator before the wheel starts to turn, and the wheel is then steered to stop on it. The spin is only there for you to watch. You can read how it works on the how WheelSpinny picks page.
Plan a week with a spinning wheel
Seven numbers make a small planner. Suppose you want to start a new habit, run a clear-out and schedule a games night, but cannot agree on days. Give each task a spin with No repeats on, and the three days are decided without a debate. Copy on the Results tab gives you the days in the order picked.
You can also put the whole week in a random order. Seven spins with No repeats give seven different days, which is a fun way to set a week of different dinners, workouts or reading goals.
Ideas for a number between 1 and 7
- Pick a day. Choose the day for a meeting, a deep clean, or a long-overdue phone call.
- Choose a person. Number seven people in a group and spin for who presents, who pays, or who picks the film.
- Lucky number games. Seven has a reputation as a lucky number, so it makes a good prize number in a children’s game.
- Rainbow games. Number the seven colors of the rainbow and spin for a color to find around the house.
- Seven-card and seven-day challenges. Pick the card position or the day on which a challenge starts.
- Teach days of the week. Young children can say the day that comes up and name the one before and after it.
Why people pick seven so often
Ask a group to pick a number from one through seven, or from 1 to 10, and a surprising number will say seven. Surveys of people choosing numbers have found that they favour seven and avoid the ends of the range. That makes a person a poor stand-in for a random generator, and it is one reason to use a wheel when the pick has to be fair.
The wheel treats 1 and 7 exactly as it treats 4. Every slice is the same size, and no number gets extra attention.
Related tools for picking from seven
To shuffle the days of the week into a random order in one click, paste them into the list randomizer. If your seven choices have names, put them on a wheel with the random name picker. If you need a wider range, try the 1 to 10 or 1 to 12 pages.
You can change the range on this page at any time. Edit From and To beside the wheel, or open the general random number generator for steps and left-out numbers.
A fair weekly rota
Households and small teams often argue over who covers which day. A weekly rota decided by the wheel ends the argument, because everyone watched it happen. Number the days 1 to 7, write the people or jobs in a list, and spin once for each, with No repeats on so that no day is used twice.
If a rota already exists and one day needs a swap, spin for just that day. Leave out the days that are already taken: open the Step and leave out box in the general random number generator and type the numbers to skip.
Seven is also a good size for a short challenge. Seven days of a new habit, seven questions in a quiz round, or seven songs on a playlist can all be ordered by the wheel in a single sitting.
Good to know
- The wheel holds the numbers 1 to 7, with both ends included.
- Your range and settings are saved in your own browser, and the Results tab lasts until you close or reload the page. Nothing is sent to a server.
- It works on phones, tablets and desktop browsers, and with a keyboard. The result is announced to screen readers.
- A device set to reduce motion skips the long spin.
- It is made for games and everyday decisions, not for security or regulated draws.
